Upper porch columns are usually made from wood and are either tapered or constructed of exposed timber. Porches tend to be several steps up from the walk way elevating the porch from the street level. Chimneys are built outside of the building and are constructed of brick and native materials. The masonry column bases and chimney act as an anchor tying the building to the site.

Landscape enhances the buildings base and reinforces the bungalows connection with nature. First story of traditional bungalows were often separated from the foundation with a horizontal water table that worked as a base to begin the first floor siding which was usually siding, or cedar shingles.
